Viscosity: A Love Story.
ISO 46 was never going to settle down. ISO 68 knew that from the start. A romance, measured in centistokes.

ISO VG 46 was the lighter of the two — quick to flow, first through the pump, always moving. At the classification's reference temperature of forty degrees Celsius, its permitted range was 41.4–50.6 centistokes. Forty-six was its nominal midpoint, not its exact identity. It mentioned this distinction often.
ISO 68 was thicker. Slower. The kind of oil that takes its time in a valve and is not sorry. Where ISO 46 saw a restriction and slipped through it, ISO 68 saw a restriction and leaned on it, and the restriction learned something about itself.
They met, as all great lubricant romances begin, in the same hydraulic system — a mistake by a contractor who had not read the manual, or perhaps had read it and believed in love. The system ran hot. And here is the thing about oils, and about people: heat changes everything. ISO 46 thinned out under pressure, became someone else, flowed away from every difficult conversation. ISO 68 just got slightly more reasonable.
Love, like hydraulic oil, is mostly a question of how you behave when the temperature changes.
The pump, an old gear pump of stern German manufacture, had opinions. It had been designed for ISO 68 — the datasheet said so, in the unambiguous way of German datasheets — and it tolerated ISO 46 the way one tolerates a charming houseguest who keeps leaving the tap running. Wear rates increased. Everyone pretended not to notice.
In the end there was a rebuild, and a flushing, and a quiet ceremony in which the system was refilled with ISO 68 alone, at the correct temperature, with the correct filtration, and the pump's noise dropped by four decibels, which in pump language is a sigh of deep contentment.
The moral is not that lighter oils are fickle and heavier oils are true. The moral is that viscosity is a promise made at a specific temperature, and you must choose the oil whose promise matches your machine. Read the datasheet. The datasheet is the love letter the manufacturer actually wrote.
